Posted: Sep 25th 2024

Our Care Homes were transformed into a kaleidoscope of colours and creativity for National Arts in Care Homes Day on 24th September. Arts in Care Homes Day is a National Activity Providers Association programme which aims to highlight the wellbeing benefits of arts, creativity and cultural engagement in care settings. We want to promote the beneficial outcomes for care recipients, staff teams and relatives, champion good practice and encourage care settings to develop more creative activities and opportunities.

Harbour believes in the Vital Role of Art & Music in Well-being:

  • Emotional Expression: Art provides a safe and empowering outlet for emotions, fostering a sense of self-worth and connection.
  • Cognitive Stimulation: Engaging in creative activities challenges the mind, promoting memory and cognitive function.
  • Social Connection: Art creates opportunities for shared experiences and meaningful interactions, combating isolation and loneliness.
  • Physical Benefits: From gentle brushstrokes to rhythmic dance movements, art can improve coordination and mobility.

At Harbour Healthcare, we believe that art and music are not just activities, but essential ingredients for a fulfilling and joyful life. Every day, we witness the profound impact they have on our residents, sparking smiles, kindling memories, and igniting a sense of purpose. We are committed to fostering an environment where creativity flourishes, where every individual feels valued and empowered to express their unique voice through the universal language of art.

Peel Moat Care Home tried some performance art with movement to music, residents took part in ribbon dancing expressing themselves freely while getting some gentle exercise. They also had a painting activity where residents decorated their own ‘home sweet home’ sign – now proudly hung up in their bedrooms.

At Clement Court Care Home we have the Art Club which takes place every Tuesday hosted by Oumie & Tracy. We have seen some brilliant art & crafts created by this art club it’s great to see everybody’s masterpieces! Friends and family are invited to join their loved ones at this activity and create special moments together.

Elburton Heights Care Home had a fun day full of art and crafts yesterday following the theme of ’home’. Residents enjoyed creating beautiful paper ornaments and flowers which brightened up their home. Paintbrushes danced across canvases, creating vibrant masterpieces that reflected the unique stories and spirits of our residents.

Treetops Court Care Home got creative with designing a flag that represents their home. All of our homes have been tasked with creating a flag that represents them, in October the Harbour board will go on their annual travels around all 23 of our homes to see how things are going – during this time the board will be presented a flag from each home and then these will form one big Harbour Healthcare flag. We are looking forward to seeing what everyone creates!

Throughout the day, art became a universal language, a bridge between generations and abilities. Staff and residents alike joined hands in collaborative projects, creating a tapestry of shared experiences that wove a vibrant new chapter into the fabric of our communities. The day had been a testament to the transformative power of art, a reminder that creativity knows no bounds, and that within each of us lies a wellspring of imagination waiting to be tapped.
